The Process
We are growing in our spiritual life whether we are aware of it or not. How you are formed spiritually is largely dependent on how intentional you are in monitoring your spiritual growth.
Your spiritual growth is a process
The process of ongoing growth begins with a desire to become more like God and more like the person He created us to be. “Desiring to know God is a commendable, necessary first step. But there is no instant spirituality; it is a journey of many steps.” Throughout the process of ongoing growth, we progress one step at a time forward in our walk of life. We cannot do tomorrow’s growth today and neither can we make up for yesterday’s shortcomings. The world we live in has a here and now to it that denies us the ability to become like God in His omnipresence and His eternality. Our lifestyle must become characterized by a desire to know God and be known by Him. “Seeking God is not just a one time affair; it must become a continuing lifestyle if believers want to deepen a friendship with him.” this is a progressional, living in the moment lifestyle that searches the depths of God’s character without minimizing the here and now. Becoming a friend with God means enjoying His presence and spending time with Him. You can’t build a deep friendship with someone you only see twice a year out of obligation.
What are you doing with God's presence in your life.
Everyone who is alive has some measure of God's presence in their life. We can either nourish God's presence or we can smother it. We are always actively engaged in one of those two processes. If we are not developing God's presence in our life, it will diminish.
The process is not the goal.
The goal of life is to know God and enjoy a relationship with Him. The process of memorizing scripture serves that goal well, but having a lot of scripture memorized is not the goal. Reading and memorizing scripture are two great processes that help to give us a relational knowledge of God.
Do more with Scripture than read it.
We can read scripture, memorize it and meditate on it as we allow it to soak down deep into our soul. Knowing the Bible will help us to know God deeply. Knowing the Bible requires us to use it as more than a book to read.
