Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:6-9

You can’t have God’s help and demand your way.

Being strong and courageous isn't determining to stand up by your own power. Courage is standing by a truth that is beyond you. Demanding your own way and standing for something only you believe in is stubborness not courage. Courage is pursuing an endeavor that is mutually agreed upon to be good while asking God for the strength to make your way prosperous. When you meditate on God’s Law and instructions day and night, you are prepared to not be afraid. You cannot have courage when you are demanding your own way, but you can be strong and courageous even when you don’t think you are able when you rely on God’s help.

You must obey what God has told you to do.

In 1 kings 13:1-32, a man of God did a sign in front of King Jeroboam and left as the Lord commanded him. However, on the way back to Judah, he rested under an oak and another man who claimed to be a prophet told him to return and have bread and water. Because he listened to the voice of another prophet instead of the word of the Lord he was eaten by a lion. You have to listen and obey what the Lord has told you and ignore the other voices you hear around you. Once you are sure of the word God has spoken to you, you can pursue it with boldness and courage. But you must ignore the voices telling you to do something else; it could cost you your life.

Devote to destruction the things that are not of God.

The phrase “devote to destruction” comes from the one Hebrew verb charad, which means to utterly destroy. While it is used mostly in reference to the Canaanite towns and their leaders, it is also used in reference to anything that is hostile to God’s kingdom. Destroying something that is standing in opposition to God is an act of worship. When you meditate on God’s word and seek to worship Him, you will be moved to utterly destroy whatever is not of God. As you work to utterly destroy things that are against God with boldness and courage, you are fulfilling God’s calling for man to bring creation into a posture of worship to Him. Listen to God, devote to destruction the things that are not of Him and build up the things that bring Him glory.
