Wages and Inheritances

We have been set free from the power of sin and death. Sin does not have a commanding authority on our lives. Our potential to become the people God desires us to become has been unleashed. God is in charge; He sets us free and gives us the Holy Spirit to help us walk in the newness of life that He has given us.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

(2 Corinthians 5:17)

You are a new creation. Live as the new you.

Not only have you been set free from your old sins, but we are now joint heirs with Christ as adopted children of God. God has opened the doors of righteousness for us and given us the inheritance of eternal life. We are free to live as God designed us to live.

Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

(John 8:34-36)

Wages are earned, an inheritance is given (Rom 6:23).

We were not children of sin, we were slaves to sin. As slaves, we were bound to serve sin without any inheritance. Yes, the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), but what is death? Death is taking away life - separation from God. It is not a “thing” you can inherit; it is the loss of a “thing,” which is life. When God sets us free from our slavery to sin, we don’t have to work to earn anything. As children, we have responsibilities - clean our rooms, take out the trash, etc. - but doing or not doing our responsibilities does not change our family status as children and heirs.

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.

(Romans 6:6-12

We were slaves to sin, but that life was crucified with Christ and put to death. We now must live for Christ since He lives for us. We know that Christ has dominion over death and has purchased us so we can be free from our slavery to sin.
