The Desires of Your Heart
Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret—it only causes harm. Psalm 37:1-8
It’s a matter of the heart not just the head.
You can't think yourself out of sin. .Avoiding sin requires a heart change as you connect trusting and resting in the Lord with the desires of your heart. The heart delights and the heart has desires. Yet desires by themselves don’t produce righteousness, it takes a commitment to those desires to make them a reality. Head knowledge informs the desires of the heart, so you can't have clear desires without the matters of the head. The desires and delights of the heart are the driving forces of your life, but without the follow through of the commitment of your mind to see your desires through to reality, those desires are wasted. Both your head and your heart have to be moving in the same direction for you to accomplish the great things you really want to accomplish.
For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land; I will build them and not pull them down, and I will plant them and not pluck them up. Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart. Jeremiah 24:6-7
You become part of God’s people when you heart becomes His and your desire becomes to know Him more.
Submit your desires to God.
You have to submit all your desires to God even when your desire to know Him more. There may be times when God interrupts your "knowing Me time" with a "doing life with Me time." If you don't practice submitting your desires to God, you won't know when it's time to avoid distractions to your time with God and when it's time to bring your time with God into your field training exercise. This is where the transformation of your mind comes in as you measure your desires against the Word of God you have filled your mind with. With the Holy Spirit and God's Word, you will know which desires you are to subjugate to other desires and other priorities, and which desires you are to work with blood sweat and tears to make it become a reality.
Desire something you are willing to die for.
With your head informing your heart, and your heart driving your desires through commitments, you will have some desires becoming so big that you will be willing to die for them. Your hunger for righteousness and desire to know Christ even in His suffering should drive you to be willing to die for the gospel. “... and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:3b). So even your desire to die for the gospel must be submitted to love. You have to desire God and His love more than anything else. Submit your desires to God and He will give you the desires of your heart. Connect your heart with your head so that you know what you want, want what you want, and are committed to making what you want become a reality.
