Clothed

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Isaiah 61:10-11

Keep the holy things holy.

To preserve the holiness of our body, we keep the unholy parts of our body covered. “And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty” (1 Corinthians 12:23). When mankind became unholy, he had to be clothed in order to cover his unholiness. “but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it.”(v. 24). However, the clothing of animal skin wasn’t enough to cover our unholiness. Christ died to clothe us again in His righteousness so that once sin is removed, we can appear with Christ before God (c.f. Collosians 3:3-4, Galatians 3:27 and Revelation 19:8). When we live a holy life, we don’t feel like we need to hide, and when we feel like we need to hide, we might want to reevaluate what we are doing.

The first death was to clothe Adam and Eve in animal skin.

After the fall, nakedness is the first thing that causes mankind to try and hide from a holy God. In response to God’s calling, Where are you?, he no longer responds with the cadanced reply of Here I am. Sin led mankind to hide his nakedness from a holy God. In order to cover the shame of his sin, Adam tried to clothe himself in fig leaves (Genesis 3:7), but trees and plants weren’t sufficient clothing. Even though Adam and Eve were the only people around, God adequately clothed them in the skins of animals that used to be alive. We cover the shame of our sin, not by hiding but by covering ourselves in life. When we live how God asks us to live, we cover ourselves in life.

The ultimate death was to clothe you in Christ's righteousness.

Just as the first death was to clothe us from our sin and shame, the ultimate death was to fully clothe us from our sin and shame. Everyone is clothed and will be clothed by something. The only question is whether we are wearing the right robe (c.f. Mattew 22:11-13). The only way to make our robes to be suitable for the marriage supper of the Lamb is to wash them in the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 7:14b). We can rejoice because God clothes us in the righteous garments of salvation as we spring forth as the jewel of creation.
